Clubs Redevelopment Proposal

BRONTE AND TAMARAMA ADVANCEMENT SOCIETY [Est. 1971]
Memo
Subject: Meeting with Representative of Bronte Surf Club
Purpose: Presentation and Explanation of the Club’s Redevelopment Proposal
Date: Sunday, 6th February 2022

Attendees:

  • James
  • Mike
  • Dave
  • Greg (unable to attend)

Summary of Discussion:

A) The proposed floor plan for the redesigned Surf Club building was presented, replacing the previous plan proposed by Waverley Council as part of the Bronte Park Plan of Management.

B) Key Questions and Responses:

  1. Does the new proposal exceed the existing building envelope?
    • Response: No, but a lighting structure increases the height slightly. James and Mike requested this be reconsidered.
  2. Does the plan encroach further into Bronte Parkland?
    • Response: No. The southern alignment will be moved back, and there will be slight excavation into the unused northern area.
  3. Is the existing height increased?
    • Response: No, except for the lighting structure mentioned earlier.
  4. Will Bronte Swim Clubs and Board Riders have access to the new clubhouse?
    • Response: Yes, the Surf Club will encourage inclusive use.
  5. Will the commercial trading compete with Bronte Beach cafés?
    • Response: No, the clubhouse will only include a small tuck shop.
  6. Will the cubicle meeting area be retained?
    • Response: Yes.

James and Mike were pleased with the meeting and that the Surf Club has discarded the previous plan, which proposed a larger footprint and encroachment into Bronte Park. BATAS, along with other resident and beach groups, objected to the previous plan and called for a more inclusive use of this publicly owned and ratepayer-funded building. A BATAS report on this issue is available upon request.
